1 Introduction Of the 166,061 species currently documented on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species (hereafter IUCN Red List), more than 46,000 are classified as threatened with extinction (IUCN 2024), which has been extrapolated to an estimated one million species at risk of extinction globally (IPBES 2019; Purvis and Isbell 2022). There is evidence that conservation can prevent species extinctions (Bolam et al. 2021; Hoffmann et al. 2015).
