Around the world, 4 February marks World Cancer Day, a day dedicated to taking collective action to address the global epidemic by advancing cancer awareness, prevention and research. Each year, millions of people are faced with the reality of a cancer diagnosis and the disease personally affects many of us. For me, cancer became a personal journey in 2008 when my mum was diagnosed with early breast cancer.

Working underground is not for everyone, but Aidan Morris hopes to remain subterranean for years. The 20-year-old tunnel worker got his break at 16 on the $3.9 billion Rozelle Interchange, which will open within weeks. “I’ve seen it go from digging out the tunnel to laying the pavement and final finishes,” Mr Morris said, who has since moved to work on the Western Harbour Tunnel, which will create a western bypass of the CBD. At the new project he is not only underground, but under water as well.

Healthcare for Australians living in rural and remote areas will be given a $16 million lift thanks to donations to the Royal Flying Doctors from Australia’s richest person, Gina Rinehart. The Rinehart Medical Foundation and Hancock Prospecting will provide major cash injections to the NSW, Queensland and Western Australian sectors of the 95-year-old organisation which relies on donations to fund a third of the healthcare it provides.
