A staff member, usually retiring, is ‘banged out’ as a mark of respect from their colleagues. I was hugely moved, and a little surprised.

Just before the end of May, Rod Stewart and his extensive clan descended upon the city of Dubrovnik in Croatia to celebrate his son Liam’s wedding to Nicole Artukovich. Over several days they sailed, swam, dined out, drank and, of course, witnessed Liam’s vows to his new wife in the baroque St Ignatius Church in the heart of the city’s old quarter. They must have cut quite the dash.

'As well as being often enchanting, and presenting a vanished world and way of life, this is also a novel that tells a compelling and well-devised, often surprising story'. Absolutely blown away by this fantastic review in The Scotsman by Allan Massie.
