IRELAND RUGBY STAR Erin King has been ruled out of the remainder of the Six Nations and this summer’s World Cup with a ‘serious knee injury’. King, the 2024 World Rugby Women’s XVs Breakthrough Player of the Year, suffered the setback in last weekend’s defeat to England at Virgin Media Park, Cork. The IRFU confirmed that King will undergo surgery in Dublin today, and begin her rehabilitation process at the IRFU High Performance Centre thereafter.

DANIEL WIFFEN HAS finished the 2025 Irish Open Swimming Championships with his third gold medal, in the 1500m Freestyle. The Olympic bronze medallist over the distance had shared Dublin world record ambitions with The 42, but had to settle for another championship record this evening. Wiffen posted the second fastest time in the world so far this year, 14:42.71, as he broke the 2018 record of 15:07.07 and smashed the consideration time for World Championships in Singapore in July (15:01.89).

RHASIDAT ADELEKE HAS been named in a 14-strong Irish team for the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, on 10-11 May. The Tallaght star’s availability is a significant boost as Ireland’s women’s, men’s and mixed 4x400m relay teams aim to secure qualification for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan in September. The top 14 teams in each event in China qualify automatically for the Worlds.

THE TEAMS OF the 2025 Lidl National Football Leagues have been unveiled. Champions Kerry lead the way in the Division 1 selection, with eight players selected. Finalists Armagh have five players included, with two spots going to Waterford and one to Dublin.

THIS WEEKEND BRINGS the start of the provincial hurling championships. Both competitions have been dominated by one county in recent years, with Kilkenny on the hunt for six in a row in Leinster. Indeed, the Cats have won 14 of the last 20 titles — and a hell of a lot more before that, as they sit atop the role of honour with 76 in all. Before Kilkenny’s latest run, Wexford lifted the Bob O’Keeffe Cup in 2019 and Galway reigned supreme in 2018.
