The Skagit County Board of Commissioners approved Monday an agreement with BNSF Railway in its effort to improve traffic at the Cook Road exit of Interstate 5. The agreement will pay BNSF to perform preliminary engineering review services for its railroad facilities in the area. With the agreement's approval, "We can move forward with our plans to design more going forward," county Commissioner Ron Wesen said Monday.

The Skagit County Board of Commissioners approved Monday, April 7, a $10 million contract for remediation work to be done at the site of the former Whitmarsh landfill. The Whitmarsh landfill, also called the March Point landfill, began as an informal roadside dump site in the 1950s on the shore of Padilla Bay. The 14-acre property became a health hazard and was closed in 1973. In the past two decades, the state found the groundwater in the landfill contained heavy metals and other contaminants.

MARBLEMOUNT - Skagit County is taking steps to sell a .6-acre property in Marblemount. The Board of Skagit County Commissioners approved a resolution on Monday to call for a public hearing for a proposal to sell its parcel. In September 2022, the county bought a nine-acre property next to Pressentin Park that included a one-story house. The county bought the parcel to keep access to land next to the Skagit River, said County Parks & Recreation Director Brian Adams in an email.

The Samish Indian Nation is conducting a yearlong survey across nearby islands to better understand historic archeological sites used by Indigenous peoples. The study, conducted by Shoreline Archeologist Katie Lewis, focuses on sites in Samish traditional territory, including Fidalgo, Guemes and the San Juan Islands. "I always like to tell people that 'Where people like to live today is where people liked to live then,' and that tends to be the shorelines," Lewis said. Lewis' position is new.
