US President Donald Trump has set a two-week deadline to decide whether the US will join Israel’s war with Iran, allowing time to seek a negotiated end to the conflict, the White House has said. The decision to leave a window for diplomacy came after Israel’s defence minister openly embraced regime change in Tehran as a war aim.

Israel attacked Iran’s Arak heavy water reactor on Thursday morning, as Iranian missiles evaded Israeli air defences to hit a hospital in the country’s south and sites around Tel Aviv. Iran had evacuated the Arak facility before the attack and there was “no radiation danger”, state TV said in a report on the bombing. Israel authorities reported 28 people had been injured in the attacks across the country, three of them seriously.

Israel faced growing international pressure earlier this month as hundreds of starving people in Gaza were killed as they tried to reach aid distribution sites. Since Israel launched its attacks on Iran on Friday, however, that diplomatic outcry has largely disappeared.
