    It’s better to go out blazing then fizzle out, and Dennis Nykoliation is doing the former as he prepares to retire for the second time in early June. Nykoliation, a violinist, and his band — accurately named the Dennis Nykoliation Band and featuring himself, Stephen Kiz, Paul Pododworny and Bill Scherbatiuk — will be wrapping up a long musical career travelling the province with a final show in Fraserwood, Man., on June 8.

    The second edition of the Future Now Expo, which has become the biggest interactive career expo of its kind in the province, is slated to take place at the Red River Exhibition Park (3977 Portage Ave.) on May 28 and 29. According to its official website, the expo will bring together over 100 various organizations to help participants of any age — from Grade 9 to mature — explore different career paths and opportunities, as well as meet professionals and ask questions.

    The Assiniboia community committee met on April 28. A short list of projects for the area were discussed. A subdivision and rezoning, which would widen the public lane (off of Duffield Street) and rezone land in a mature community in order to accommodate a new apartment building at 202 Duffield St., was approved. The proposed development, if completed, would be three storeys tall and contain nine residential units. Two are affordable. Currently, a large single-family home, bulit in 1939, is on-site.

    Welcome to the jungle. Untamed: A Cirque Spectacular will swing into the Centre culturel franco-manitobain on April 4 and 5. It is described as a local Cirque du Soleil produced and created by the Prairie Sky Circus, a local group of six women who have all been involved in the circus arts scene for varying amounts of time.
