New apartments in Silver Heights approved by Assiniboia C.C.

The Assiniboia community committee met on April 28. A short list of projects for the area were discussed. A subdivision and rezoning, which would widen the public lane (off of Duffield Street) and rezone land in a mature community in order to accommodate a new apartment building at 202 Duffield St., was approved. The proposed development, if completed, would be three storeys tall and contain nine residential units. Two are affordable. Currently, a large single-family home, bulit in 1939, is on-site.

The Snow Motion Classic, the premier event of Snow Motion, Winnipeg’s winter dog sports club, is set to run Sunday, Feb. 16 in Birds Hill Park.

After more than a decade, Yulia Zmerzla has stepped down as executive director of Oseredok Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Centre. Oseredok was her first job after immigrating to Canada 11 years ago, and she announced she was leaving at the beginning of this month — big news to start off the new year. She is moving to a position at the Lions Foundation of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario, a registered charity which aims to help those in need of accessible medical assistance.

Newcomers to Canada are four times more likely to drown than those who were born here, according to the Lifesaving Society. Now one Winnipegger, backed by a team of instructors, is helping change that. Aqua Essence Swim Academy (1585 Kenaston Blvd.) is the home of the Swim With Me Foundation, which offers free swimming lessons for children and adults who are either new to Canada or living in the lowest-income areas of the city.

Just outside Oak Bluff sits West Wind Stables. Inside, sheltered from the colder winter months, are 42 horses. Although half of the massive barn where they’re kept is dedicated to privately-owned horses, the other half is cared for by the non-profit Prairie Strides program, which gives kids living with disabilities the opportunity to ride and interact with the horses, helping them become more physically confident while also encouraging social and emotional growth.

The Assiniboia community committee of Winnipeg city council held its first meeting of 2025 on Jan. 7. It was a lengthy day, and the committee discussed a number of large developments planned for the area. The first hearing covered Winnipeg’s newest Costco Wholesale location — which, when completed, will be located at 4055, 4075 and 4077 Portage Ave., near Red River Exhibition Park and Assiniboia Downs. The building is currently under construction.
