Emma Jeffries: Educated: A Memoir by Tara WestoverIt’s rare that I find non-fiction to be such a page-turner, but Tara Westover’s autobiography was just that. It reads more like a novel than biography, but the exciting passages of prose are interspersed with Westover’s reflections on the experiences she went through and her wider message about the importance of education in forming an individual.

Why are men still getting more firsts than women? Oxford University’s Strategic Plan for 2018 to 2024 claims to prioritise the need to reduce the gender awarding gap. It aims to “set ambitious targets by April 2019 to reduce by 2024 gaps in attainment by gender, ethnic origin and socio-economic background.” But, why should this be “ambitious” anyway?

After spending an entire day in the library, the last thing I want to do to relax is more reading. And that’s if I can even fit it into my packed term-time schedule. But in 2024, my New Year’s Resolution is to read more pleasurable books. I want to find time to make reading relaxing again, and enjoy some books off my rather long TBR list. After being a bit too optimistic with my 2023 Goodreads Challenge, 2024 is going to be the year where I repair my relationship with books.
