The sense of excitement in the hall at Sydenham Primary School was palpable. Eight professional actors from the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) were limbering up for their performance of Romeo and Juliet, a group of year 5 and 6 children were having a last-minute pep talk about their roles, and pupils from visiting schools were excitedly taking their seats.

The stresses and strains of balancing jobs and childcare show no sign of abating. As well as the punitive cost, it’s tough for parents to juggle looking after their children and coping with work. The Fawcett Society, an equal rights charity, reported last year that a quarter of a million mothers with young children have left their jobs because of the difficulties in balancing it all. Childcare is an age-old problem that generations of parents have had to grapple with.

I bit my nails badly all the way through childhood – so badly that they hurt. As a teenager I was so embarrassed by the state of my nails that I devised desperate strategies to hide them, pulling my sleeves down over my fingers and shoving my hands behind my back at every opportunity. I didn’t kick the habit for good till my 40s, which is why I regard a manicure as one of the greatest treats in life.
