Today is Earth Day. Please see below a joint letter spearheaded by Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) calling on political candidates to focus on environmental and climate change issues, as election campaigning continues this year. We hope that they will take it seriously and take responsibility for the environments in which their constituents live. The environment is not a niche issue. Civil Society urges political leaders to address environmental issues this election seasonApril 22, 2025.

CCRP (the Caribbean Community of Retired Persons) will be fifteen years old tomorrow. My warmest congratulations to the team, founded and led by the marvellous Mrs. Jean Lowrie-Chin, who wrote this post. She was inspired to establish the non-governmental organisation by her late mother, Maisie Lowrie (I wish I could have met her!) and they have gone from strength to strength, steadily building over the years. It is challenging to start an organisation like CCRP in Jamaica.

The month of May approacheth (already?) and this year, that means Jamaica’s Calabash International Literary Festival is on. There’s not much information on their website yet, as it will be launched at Kingston’s Devon House next week. Then we will have the full line-up, and more. What we do know is that it will take place, as usual, over the U.S. Memorial Day holiday for three days (May 23 – 25, 2025); it is a biennial event in the not-so-sleepy village of Treasure Beach, on Jamaica’s south coast.

According to the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has shot and killed 95 people this year to date (as of April 15, 2025). This compares to 189 fatal shootings for the whole of last year, and is a 165 percent increase over the same period of three and a half months in 2024.

I read so much gloomy news about the environment these days that it is hard to keep thinking positive, sometimes. But here’s one reason to be cheerful: a regional initiative in which six cities (including two in Jamaica) will be actively involved to combat plastic pollution.
