CORRESPONDENCE 14 January 2025 Donald Trump’s incoming administration in the United States has signalled that it might significantly cut funding for research on infectious diseases, inequality and climate science, among other long-established areas (see Nature https://doi.org/nxdf (2024); Science https://doi.org/nxdg; 2024). If this happens, philanthropic funders should step in to help fill the gap.
