Shopping locally for groceries may be handy but people who rely on convenience stores can end up paying far more. Campaigners have criticised retailers for not doing enough to close the price gap with large supermarkets, especially during the cost-of-living crisis.

The former subpostmaster and campaigner Sir Alan Bates is calling on the government to set a deadline of next March to pay redress to the hundreds of victims who helped to uncover the Horizon IT scandal. In a message addressed to other subpostmasters involved in the Group Litigation Order (GLO), Sir Alan raises concerns that some older participants are settling claims sooner "just to get it all over with".

A former Fujitsu software engineer who appeared as an expert witness in court has admitted the Post Office asked him to alter his evidence to make it less emotive. Gareth Jenkins told the public inquiry into the Horizon scandal that the witness statement he had prepared for the case against sub-postmaster Noel Thomas was changed to save the Post Office embarrassment. Mr Thomas was sentenced to nine months for false accounting in 2006 and spent his 60th birthday in prison.
