It’s been a long journey to get where we are now - but we should all be thrilled that those cruel and gruelling journeys are finally coming to an end. Since the 1960s, there have been up to 40 million sheep, calves and pigs exported abroad on journeys that could last over 100 hours in poor and cramped conditions. It’s a shocking figure - and means on average 82 animals have experienced these gruelling journeys every single hour.

The RSPCA turns 200 this year - but it’s not the only landmark birthday in 2024 at our fabulous charity. Because our public affairs team - responsible for advising and persuading governments, politicians and other decision makers about animal welfare’s importance - marks 100 years in business this year. That's not to say we weren't lobbying for change before then, of course.

This week, diversions from two major global shipping routes are supporting container rates, pushing the Platts Container Index up to highs not seen since the coronavirus pandemic. In the Red Sea, attacks by Houthi rebels have prompted some carriers to divert shipments away from the Suez Canal and around the Cape of Good Hope instead. This comes on top of restrictions on passage through the Panama Canal caused by low water levels.

The final straw for us at the RSPCA was a recent abandonment of a pledge to consult on banning cages for farm animals - something which consigns millions of hens and pigs to misery. That was the latest in a series of policies to be heavily delayed and then dropped. This UK Government pledged to be a world leader for animals - yet bans on importing fur and foie gras have bitten the dust.
