We all have a story to tell, some talking more than others, and all the stories are special.     Here’s a brilliant idea for spreading Christmas joy among our children: a toy-swap. Old toys become familiar, and no longer interesting to their owners. Why not swap them for new ones? “It’s a great way for toys to have a second life,” said Rita Pinto of Castelo de Sonhos, a family charity that has been operating in Silves for 30 years. “Instead of toys just taking up space, they find a new home.”With an eye on saving money and also saving the planet, why throw away perfectly good toys?

    The city of Silves was buzzing with excitement last Saturday night. It was the public unveiling of a striking new sculpture, entitled “For Freedom They Dreamed and Fought“. The sculpture stands as a memorial to the people from Silves who were political prisoners during Portugal’s military dictatorship (1926-1933) and fascist dictatorship (1933-1974). The dictatorships ended in 1974 with the Carnation Revolution. The iron and composite artwork is four meters high.

    More than 2,000 garden lovers gathered at the Fatacil Showground in Lagoa to meet nursery owners, buy plants and garden supplies, attend workshops, chat with kindred spirits, and learn as much as possible about the art of gardening. The cooler autumn is a good time for planting in the Algarve climate. For the plants, of course it is; but also for the hard working gardeners who are glad to say goodbye to the intense summer heat.
