Calgary's downtown Suncor Energy Centre office complex is set for $90-million in renovations and upgrades, including a performing arts centre and a food hall, to reposition the property into a mixed-use destination. Brookfield Properties and ARCI announced Friday the massive redevelopment plan, which will also include a restaurant, landscaped terrace and mix of public and private amenities into a reimagined indoor-outdoor gathering space at the base of the centre’s two premier office towers.

“We're stepping gingerly into a recovery.” That was the message from MSCI head of real estate economics Jim Costello as he opened Tuesday's Global Property Market conference in Toronto. “We've gone through a tremendous down period in returns, investment volume and activity, so where we get to on the other side of this is still a little bit unknown," he told the audience at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Three private investors are spending $197.5 million to purchase the Norgate Apartments from KingSett Capital and Starlight Investments in the Montreal borough of Saint-Laurent, in what broker JLL calls the biggest multifamily transaction in Quebec this year in price and unit count. The deal includes 1,108 units in 74 low-rise, walk-up buildings at 1200-1600 Décarie and 1205-1595 Ouimet streets. It translates to an average of $178,250 per unit. The cap rate is 5.38 per cent.

As part of an informed panel, I spoke about how small business priorities align with city and regional economic development strategies. As an urban planner, I’m interested in the linkages between land uses, transportation systems and business, economic and employment matters. When thinking about land-use planning, typically real estate comes to mind.

Ahmed Group's proposed development of a mixed-use, purpose-built rental project of 568 units at 1000 and 1024 Dundas St. E. in Mississauga has taken a major step forward after a settlement was agreed to with Mother Parkers Tea & Coffee Inc. The Region of Peel Council removed the lands south of Dundas Street East from its Employment Areas in July 2022 to allow for residential mixed-use developments.

David Podmore, who co-founded Concert Properties in 1989 and has served in senior executive roles with the firm for 35 years, plans to retire as company chairman on June 30. Podmore has been planning his retirement for the past several years, and will step down in the same month in which he celebrates his 75th birthday.
