An organization that promotes sustainable practices at higher education institutions across the country has recognized Central Michigan University’s campuswide efforts. CMU earned a silver ranking for its efforts from the The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education ranking system in May. Students from Central Sustainability spent three years auditing campus efforts to put together the report behind the award.

After a third year of increases in first-year and transfer students, enrollment at Central Michigan University is higher the first day of the 2024 academic year than the first day of 2023. Jayla Turner and Camille Cashen are among CMU’s expected 2,240 new freshmen, members of the biggest class of first-year students since 2019 and its third in a row with more people than the previous year.

Laila Lloyd came to Central Michigan University at a challenging time for an introvert. It was 2021. In-person events were taking place, but lots of things still happened online. Then, IMPACT helped break her out of her shell. IMPACT takes place over two days before Fall semester classes officially start. New students from marginalized communities are paired with mentors to help them get acquainted with the CMU community and the university’s campus.

Central Michigan University’s Office of Research and Graduate Studies set a record in raising research-related funds, topping the old mark by 48 percent. ORGS raised $38 million during the fiscal year that ended June 30. It was also the third straight year that CMU raised more than $25 million in grants and contracts, said Bradley Swanson, interim vice president for research and innovation.

A volunteer researcher with a museum in suburban Detroit found a trail of microfilm breadcrumbs that led staff to Clarke Historical Library’s digitized newspaper collection and a major countywide project about the Underground Railroad. The volunteer was following a tip that a Revolutionary War veteran was buried in Birmingham when he found clues about former slaves. Following up in the Birmingham Eccentric, preserved on microfilm, would require long work hours.

Odil Dilmurodov wanted to find a sense of community at Central Michigan University. The freshman tried club sports in the fall semester but wanted something just a little more. He found it after attending a talk by Wiline Pangle, director of CMU’s Integration of Science, Technology and Engineering program. InSciTE teaches students that diversity is a strength in STEM fields because it focuses different, unique perspectives on a problem.
