SALT LAKE CITY — Former President Jimmy Carter was remembered in Salt Lake City on the day of his funeral with a special honor by the local chapter of an organization nearest to his heart. Habitat for Humanity Greater Salt Lake Area raised memorial walls inside their local ReStore to celebrate all the former president has done for the nonprofit that helps build homes for people and provides an affordable mortgage. "Jimmy Carter was a man of action.

Editor’s note: The following story is part of Xpress’ annual Humor Issue. This is a satirical piece that is not meant to be taken seriously. Happy New Year. To say that 2024 was a tumultuous year for Western North Carolina would be putting things mildly. We went through a lot — both good and bad. (OK, mostly it was bad.) However, Tropical Storm Helene was not the only thing that happened last year. And while time marches forward, it’s important to look back.

Normally this column involves me making jokes with fellow local comedians about traffic on Patton Avenue, weird breweries — that sort of thing. But the fact is there’s no way to not talk about the impact Tropical Storm Helene has had on our community. Believe me, I’ve tried. Like everyone in Asheville, life is totally different for me now. Fortunately, I didn’t lose anyone or anything in the storm. I keep thinking I’ve been incredibly lucky, but I don’t really feel lucky.

It’s my favorite time of year at Xpress: Best of WNC. I’m one of those people who likes to think I am not inherently competitive, but really that is not the case. I’ve got opinions on everything, and fortunately I’m always right. (Kidding, of course, though I am fairly confident that my superpower is good taste.)That said, I don’t want to seem biased in this issue, so I can’t tell you who earned my vote for this year’s Best Of — no matter how much I want to. And trust me, I do want to.

June is busting out all over, to paraphrase Rodgers and Hammerstein poorly. The fireflies are back, school is out, and tourism is really ramping up in town. It’s a time when everything feels alive and vital, a time for fun and new experiences. Or at least that’s the case for most people. Personally, I hate the summer. I can’t deal with heat. When I’m not writing and performing hilarious jokes like these, my main job is in meat. I’ve been working in a 40-degree room every day for 17 years.

Maybe I’m going out on a limb here, but I think it’s a safe bet that anyone reading a comedy column in Xpress probably recycles, composts and generally gives a hoot and does not pollute. Is it enough though? What else can we do to help keep Earth from becoming a hellish sun-bleached wasteland filled to the brim with microplastics? That question keeps me up at night. I don’t have all the answers, and all the giant conglomerates of the world don’t seem to have them either (or more likely don’t care).
