Ratleff has written an impressive, insightful, award-winning novel – a memoir really – about his childhood. Dancing to the Lyrics takes us through his sudden uprooting at age 4 from small-town Ohio to one of Baltimore’s toughest neighborhoods, where he lives with his young mother, two sisters and often violent and abusive stepfather. For a while, their home was across the street from a state prison and outside their back door was a huge junkyard.

Gay college freshman Matthew Shepard was viciously beaten, tied to a fence post and left to die on a cold night in Wyoming in October 1998. His murder shocked the nation. On Dec. 1, 1998, which would have been Matthew’s 22nd birthday — the Matthew Shepard Foundation was born. Through his parents' efforts, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability were added to federal hate crimes law in 2009. We’ve seen other advancements since then.

His murder shocked the world. Through his grief-stricken mother Judy Shepard’s efforts, sexual orientation and gender identity were added to federal hate crimes laws in 2009. She was driven by her son’s killing to campaign for LGBTQ rights and anti-violence in general.

Funeral Diva, published by San Francisco’s City Lights Publishers, is a powerful collection of poems and prose described as a “coming of age in New York City during the late 1980s.”Funeral Diva, finished while COVID raged in 2020, chronicles Sneed's life as a proud Black lesbian and the impact of the AIDS pandemic on Black queer life.
