For a moment—brief, beautiful, and raw—we remembered what it meant to be am echad, one people. But the unity didn’t last. It didn’t even last long enough to get through shloshim. By November, old fault lines re-emerged with a vengeance.

This body, initially convened by Theodor Herzl in 1897, is responsible for allocating over $1 billion annually to support Jewish education, religious institutions, and Zionist initiatives worldwide. It is the Jewish world’s most significant yet least understood representative body.

Reports that President Trump signed an executive order targeting antisemitic foreign students for deportation should alarm every American Jew. On the surface, this may seem like a necessary measure to combat the unprecedented rise in antisemitic hate since October 7. After all, why should foreign nationals who violate the law and endorse terrorism be allowed to stay in the country?
