The LA Fire Chief warned in the weeks before the devastating Palisades fire that the decision to cut the department's budget by nearly $18 million would diminish its ability to prepare for and respond to large scale emergencies. The budget reduction, approved last year by Mayor Karen Bass, was mostly absorbed by leaving many administrative jobs unfilled, but that left about $7 million that was cut from its overtime budget that was used for training, fire prevention, and other key functions.

A woman from Hawaii who went missing after landing at LAX has been reported safe and has contacted her family, the family's attorney said on Wednesday. Hannah Kobayashi was reported missing on Nov. 11 after her relatives said they received "strange and cryptic, just alarming" text messages from Kobayashi, after she missed her connecting flight from LAX to New York City. The sources said there was no evidence of foul play in her disappearance. The father of a missing Hawaii woman, Ryan Kobayashi, has died after an apparent suicide, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The 58-year-old father had been searching for his daughter, 30-year-old Hannah Kobayashi, after she missed her connecting flight to New York from LAX. Hannah was supposed to meet with family on Nov. 8, according to family. Kobayashi died after he jumped off from a parking structure near LAX sometime around 4 a.m. on Sunday, police confirm.
