The chessboard is a theater of romance and seduction. When a knight flashes both its right angles, linear-minded rooks are lured into a natural checkmating position. This could even break a queen's heart. With this hint in mind please try to find white's mating attack. Because black's bishop targets the white king's escape square on h2, both black's queen and rook on d8 threaten mate in two. Black also has material superiority. The Battle of the Champions in 550 B.C. was fought between the Greek city-states Argos and Sparta. The two city-states agreed that only 300 warriors on each side would fight. It transpired in an open field in plain view for both Argives and Spartans to see. At the end of a long day's fighting, only 2 Argives and 1 Spartan were left standing. Confident in their numerical superiority, the Argives declared themselves victorious and went home.

The Woman's World Chess Championship match concluded mid-April. Reigning champion Wenjun Ju faced fellow countrywoman Zhongyi Tan of China. Ju dominated the match and won before playing the final scheduled games. This week's position is from the seventh game of their match. Ju is white; Tan, black. Here, both white's rooks threaten black's bishop, and black's king and rook both threaten white's knight. White's next move proves that black's threat is hollow and unable to exchange blows.
