The election of Pope Leo XIV has brought attention back to the pontiff from whom he took his papal name: Pope Leo XIII, who reigned from 1878-1903. Specifically, it has highlighted what the 13th Leo is most known for: the introduction of modern “Catholic Social Teaching,” which can be found in many of his writings, but most particularly in his famous encyclical 1891 Rerum Novarum. Catholic Social Teaching holds an odd place in the panoply of Catholic teaching.

A decades-long strategy of the Left that has been used to much success is name-calling. If that sounds like a juvenile way to describe what the Left does, that’s because it’s a juvenile tactic. Any criticism of Leftist policies is met with shouts of “racist” or “homophobe” or “misogynist” in an attempt to shut down debate. Why did the Left engage in this behaviour? Bishop Robert Barron recently appeared on the Tucker Carlson Show, in a wide-ranging discussion that covered prayer, evolution, AI, the New Atheist Movement, and about a dozen more topics. Although our country has Protestant roots and is still predominantly Protestant, we are now accustomed to Catholics in high political office. Unfortunately, many of those Catholic politicians—people such as Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and Richard Durbin—aren’t very good Catholics, showing disdain for fundamental Catholic teaching like the dignity of the unborn and the sacredness of marriage.

The default position of every Catholic should be for peace and negotiated resolutions…as every pope of the past 100+ years has insisted.

This is actually a huge step forward from previous administrations (including Trump 45), which would have likely jumped on the Israeli bandwagon and not distanced themselves from the strikes. It would be better if they condemned it, but it’s a step in the right direction. https://t.co/uuhqfW0RZH
