Brandon Santini  Which Way Do We Go? (MoMojo Records)If you’re a blues fan, we tend to lament the early days of traditional blues – and the loss of the giants who birthed them. With the passing of each and every musical hero from our past, we grow even more sensitized to all that we’ve lost. If you love blues harmonica: Little Walter, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Paul Butterfield, John Mayall – all head-turning harmonica players and singers, they’ve become larger than life over time.

John Cowan & Andrea Zonn – The HercuLeons (True Lonesome Records) The names you likely know. John Cowan first made his name as a singer and as a bassist with the New Grass Revival, despite not having been schooled in a bluegrass background. This didn’t stop him from helping bring huge crossover success to the band when he joined for their second release – a success which continued until they disbanded some 14 years later.

Antonio Andrade – Here We Go! No one can say Antonio Andrade doesn’t have a sense of humor. He boldly starts his set with a “Looney Tunes Medley” (Tracks 1-4) & while one would take this with a grain of salt & dismiss it as novelty shtick – it isn’t. Antonio’s arranged & performed these melodies with a good sense of medley & with enthusiasm & a few shots of harmonica. Each tune is short, concise & nostalgic.

The Seldom Scene – Remains To Be Scene (Smithsonian Folkways) Much more an institution than a band, the original Seldom Scene came together in 1971, as dobro player Mike Auldridge, bassist Tom Gray, mandolinist John Duffey, banjo player Ben Eldridge and guitarist John Starling descended upon the Washington, D.C. area and immediately started something new and noteworthy.

The Scarlet Goodbye – El Camino Adios This showcase, according to its press, is a collaborative effort produced by Minnesota musicians Jeff Arundel (acoustic guitar/organ/vocal) with additional production by Daniel Murphy (ex-Soul Asylum & Golden Smog on electric guitar/vocal). The vocals on the opening tune “To Feel the Sun” are sung vigorously in unison to good effect.

As the TDSB waves its mighty sceptre towards closing schools-blind to their role in each community-why aren't we shutting down the TDSB?
