Jobair Jaber was first introduced to the fashion industry while studying business at McGill University in Montreal. “My network was full of creatives,” he says. “I helped out on production and worked on freelance projects here and there.” Those early experiences nurtured a vision that Jaber had for a minimalistic, utilitarian capsule collection.

No matter what discipline she’s working in, Golnar Ahmadian has a proven knack for bringing her creative visions to life. After moving from Tehran to Toronto, she turned her eye for design—honed by an education in architecture—toward building a handmade-jewellery line, Lo’bat. Its growth encouraged Ahmadian to continue expanding her repertoire into clothing and lifestyle. “I don’t like to restrict myself to only one field, one style or one category,” she says.

As a taller woman, Naomie Caron has long had trouble finding clothes that fit. That source of frustration led to her studying fashion in Montreal. “I thought, ‘Why not create it myself?’” she says. Caron grew up in a business-savvy family—her mother is a serial entrepreneur—and she spent a few years after graduation figuring out her calling. “Fashion design is a competition,” she says.

Charlotte Piché’s move into jewellery was driven by a desire to create something that is truly inclusive. “I always loved fashion as a form of individuality and self-expression,” she says. “But I hated the industry and everything it stood for. Jewellery in itself is a loophole [in that] it works for people of all ages, shapes, sizes and genders.” After studying metalsmithing in Brooklyn, Piché returned home to Montreal to start up her own brand in 2014.

That was the question for designer Sasha Jardine, who ended up splurging on a long black puffer coat to protect herself against Toronto’s biting windchill. But it wasn’t long before she felt like something was missing. “It dawned on me that everybody was wearing some version of that coat,” she says.
