The 18 January endorsement of Tanzania’s president Samia Suluhu Hassan by the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi as its sole presidential candidate in the October general election came six months earlier than the party’s traditional date for choosing its flagbearer. CCM often elects its presidential flagbearer in June of each election year after the dissolution of parliament.
