The cows are mostly standing when I enter, shuffling hay from foot to foot, some inherited dance or ancestral trait handed down, like dogs turning in baskets. They huff in greeting. Great sleek beasts, leaking steam like trains as they approach me. Some come to push their noses against me. Their coats are thickest now. This many together keep the barn warm. Their heat is visible, airstreams of yellow around planes of black and white. I lean into a flank.

Dear AuntIt is your birthday today, 11th November, and for the first time since I lost you, I do not wish you were here. I try and place you in the world now, and I can’t. Everyone is so busy and impatient and stressed. I am pleased that I don’t have to worry about people jostling you in the supermarket or pushing in front of you on the bus.

Menopause -  the elephant in the room. A big pink elephant that sweats and swears and stomps about. We can’t go under it. We can’t go over it. We’ll have to go through it. Squishy squashy goes our tummies. Mushy mush goes our brains. Streamy steam goes our bodies. Wrinkle, wrinkle becomes our skin. The menopause is embarrassing. It suggests we are getting old. Infertile. Pointless.

Recently I’ve (not) welcomed a new guest to my dinner party of unwanted emotions. I already eat next to Anxiety (she separates her peas from her carrots) and opposite Panic (she worries about the chicken being well cooked). Insecurity eats all the bread. I thought I had a full house, but we’ve had to shuffle over for Despondency. She doesn’t eat anything; doesn’t see the point in food. Or anything else. I’ve never been a massive fan of Ericka Mary Waller.

[This piece first appeared in the September 2024 edition of my monthly newsletter, The Enzograph.]So, I thought I'd share with you some insights into how I create the characters in my writing but, well... in all honesty, I don’t really know!A million half-formed people and pairs of legs and rolling heads bob about in the orbit of my brain. Pairs of teeth and velcro slippers and the way someone pronounces "Raleigh" as "Raaaa-leee".

She would follow me if I let her. Would amble, shifting her bulk, hooves tapping out the Hymn of the Shepherd on the iron cold earth. This bleak midwinter. Poor as I am https://t.co/13H6bCs9xp https://t.co/DOazLn3KFZ
