It’s that time of year again, and that is always the big question around here. I was going to write this article for the next issue (4/23) but I’m pretty sure the lake will be open prior to that issue, and that would be old news at that point. Right now the lake is looking pretty dark, and that is usually the sign that the ice is getting saturated and honeycombed with water. Basically, it’s like a bunch of vertical icicles all just waiting for a reason to calve off and break apart.

The legendary Mille Lacs name of McQuoid continues to make waves on the professional walleye tournament front. Generational tournament angler Eric McQuoid and partner (literally) Greta Meleen put a hurt on the walleyes in the first AIM pro walleye event of the season on the Bay of Green Bay. The Wisconsin Division Garmin Open on the Fox River at Green Bay was part of the 12th annual AIM Weekend Walleye Series and was held Sunday, April 6. kAmac\J62C\@=5 |4"F@:5 D2:5 :? 2?

MN nonprofit organization MN-Fish held a meeting recently in Grand Rapids to discuss a number of timely MN fishing topics. One forum was about the possible effects that the relatively new technology of forward facing sonar (FFS) is having on fish populations — especially muskies and panfish. Over 200 people attended the meeting, including some of the who’s who of the fishing world here in MN. kAmuu$ 92D 366? 2C@F?5 D:?46 a_`g[ A@DD:3=J 62C=:6C[ 3FE 5:5 ?@E 86E >F49 2EE6?E:@?

The year 2023 was actually a landmark year for the big lake whether anglers realized it or not. That season was the first time anglers could keep a walleye for the entire open water season. No catch and release, no closures, no ban on live bait - just go fishing and keep a fish for a fish fry. This had not happened on Mille Lacs Lake since 2014. kAm%96 C62D@?
