Solving protein folding Proteins are large molecules that are directly involved in the chemical processes essential for life and are built up from 20 amino acids that can be combined in many different ways. The function of a protein is determined by its three-dimensional structure, which can be quite complex based on how the string of amino acids is folded. How a protein is folded is determined by its amino acid sequence.
