In late December, President-elect Donald Trump put pharmacy benefit managers, or PBMs, on notice. Denouncing the $557 billion industry as “horrible middlemen,” responsible for—and “rich as hell” from— America’s incomparably high prescription drug prices, Trump vowed to get rid of them. “We’re going to knock out the middlemen,” he said at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago.

BY ERIKA FRY & 김타영 기자 3월 초, 뉴욕 요크빌의 물리치료 클리닉 ‘펑션 베터(Function Better)’ 소유주 조 마틴(Joe Martin)은 사업 은행 계좌를 보고 해킹을 당했다고 생각했다. 정형외과 임상 전문의인 마틴은 22년 넘게 클리닉을 운영해 온 경험으로 매주 들어오는 수입을 잘 알고 있다. 그래서 계좌 잔액이 심각하게 줄어든 것을 보고 놀랐다. 하지만 마틴이 해킹당한 것이 아니었다. 펑션 베터의 청구 업체가 이용하는 체인지 헬스케어(Change Healthcare)가 해킹을 당했다. 체인지 헬스케어는 미국 의료 청구의 3분의 1에서 절반을 처리하는 정산소다. 이 회사는 연간 미국에서 놀랍게도 1.5조 달러의 청구를 처리한다.

After more than 22 years in operation, Martin, an orthopedic clinical specialist, had a good sense of the revenue that came in the door each week, and so he was alarmed when his statement showed the account had been severely depleted.
