The titles that have made it to many Goodreads members’ lists have been by mega bestsellers like Stephen King, sure, but they’ve also been by more authors of color, and have explored things like social issues and family trauma through the lens of horror. There also seems to be a thing with mushrooms.

There was, for example, a week in which every novel I read featured a protagonist who lost a hand as a side effect of violent dynastic disputes. More recently, I encountered in one week that featured active, interventionist gods.
