    Yesterday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released a draft risk assessment, or scientific report, on the potential human health risks associated with the presence of toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemicals in biosolids, also called sewage sludge. I have been talking about the health risks of this sludge since Day 1 of this newsletter, so to have our largest environmental agency discuss the severity of this issue is a big deal.

    Suzanne and I had hoped to start the year on a lighter note, but two different crises in our country—one in Richmond, Virginia, where she lives, and one in Los Angeles, California, where I live—offer a picture worth talking about. Our hearts are with everyone who has been impacted. It’s scary, inconvenient, and challenging when you don’t have running water at home. It’s terrifying to flee from a wildfire and unimaginable to lose your home and everything in it.

    Water treatment can be a tricky science. You can’t treat water, unless you know what’s in it. Just like a blood test for disease, you can only find what you test for. If you don’t order a specific test for a specific chemical, you won’t know it’s there. The Brockovich Report is a reader-supported publication. A California ballot initiative that passed in the mid 1980s known as Proposition 65, or the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires businesses to inform state residents about exposures to chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
