Following last year’s disappointing season, in which the Cardinals went 5–18–1 overall and 3–14–1 in conference, the team entered their 2024–25 campaign looking to right some wrongs. “Last year it felt like we were really close to getting over the hump and finishing games,” forward Ethan “Davey” Davidson ’26 said. “So we were really looking forward to the year.

In Play(er) of the Week, our goal is to highlight outstanding athletes or moments from games that deserve extra attention. Dylan Connors ’26 is a safety on the Wesleyan football team from West Milford, N.J. For his outstanding efforts in the Red and Black’s season opening 43–7 victory over Middlebury, in which he blocked and recovered a punt and then ran it in for a touchdown, he was named NESCAC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Laura Baine ’24 is a member of the Wesleyan women’s lacrosse team who has established herself as one of the most indispensable elements of the Cardinals’ offense this season. This past week, she had two monster games.

Last year ended in mixed emotions for the Cardinals. The men’s ice hockey team earned their first ever NESCAC regular season title and the #1 seed in the NESCAC Tournament. But their season came to an abrupt close with a shocking 3–4 defeat to Williams in the first round. Coming into this year, the Cardinals looked to keep up the strong momentum from the previous regular season.

On Wednesday, Feb. 14, what was supposed to be one of the most celebratory days of the year for the Kansas City Chiefs turned into one of the most devastating. Six years to the day after 17 people were murdered in the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history in Parkland, Fla., one person was killed and 22 (including 11 children) were injured during a mass shooting that occurred following the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII victory parade.
