The sun was burning high and bright on a pellucid morning when I stepped onto Ngula, more commonly known as Jar Island, off Australia’s Kimberley Coast. The dull yellow of the rocks and sand bounced off the vivid blue of the Timor Sea all around me. Behind me was a slab of rock where the island’s traditional land owners, the Wunambal Gaambera people, lay their dead millennia ago. Before me, a cluster of boulders, more than a billion years old, contained clues about how they had lived.
