1 Introduction Individuals are constantly sensing their surrounding environment and adjusting their behaviour accordingly (Dingemanse and Wolf 2013; Snell-Rood 2013). In many taxa, multiple sensory modalities, including vision, audition, olfaction, tacticion, gustation, and nociception, have evolved to detect the environment, often through ‘cross-modal’ interactions (Shimojo and Shams 2001; Sur et al. 1990).
