1 INTRODUCTION Disease strongly affects all scales of biological organization by influencing individual behaviour (e.g. Buck et al., 2018), population dynamics (Hudson et al., 1998), community and ecosystem structure (Monk et al., 2022; Wood et al., 2007), and ultimately shapes the evolution of both host and pathogen (May & Anderson, 1983).
