    In fall of 2022, with support from the Templeton Foundation and a grant through Fuller Theological Seminary, Michael Paul Cartledge, Erin Raffety and the Institute for Youth Ministry of the Princeton Theological Seminary launched Cultivating God’s Brainforest, an online learning module for youth workers that centers and celebrates neurodiversity among young people.

    Here’s something I wrote about research with churches, though I think the insights could likely apply to other organizations, like nonprofits and corporations, too. A few years ago, we did several years of research with a diverse cohort of thriving congregations across the country. We didn’t set out to understand how congregations could thrive amidst a global pandemic, but those were the cards we, and everyone else, were dealt.

    A few months ago, at the end of July, I helped host the conference of my dreams: we brought together practical theologians and ethnographers who study Christian congregations and huddled together for a couple days sharing insights, visions, and challenges about this church that we so love-hate. I got to bring my pedagogical creativity to crafting exercises and conversations between scholars, and I got to share some of the work I’d been doing with people I deeply respect and admire.
