People in every generation struggle to find their identity. According to a study by Horowitz Research and Vox Media, two in five Gen Zers want to be asked who they are. This is a shift away from wanting to be told who they are by society. This generation wants to own their identity. The study also revealed Gen Z prefers labels based on personality traits and preferences rather than on society’s emphasis on gender, race, and physical characteristics.

“Am I a woman?” “Do I feel like a woman?” “What is a woman?” You probably know someone who is asking these types of questions and who may even feel uncomfortable in her own body. In the U.S., according to the William’s Institute, 1.6 million people over the age of 13 identify as transgender. In a study done a few years ago, 42% of Americans claimed they knew someone who was transgender. According to another study, half of young adults believe that gender can be different than sex assigned at birth.

I must begin with a confession: I’m guilty. I’m a misuser of authority. Leeman writes, “Here is an unassailable fact: To some degree, you and I have misused our authority by lording it over others” (xvi). He confesses not only that has he misused authority but that apart from the grace of God, he’ll continue to do so. We’ve all used our authority to serve ourselves for our own purposes and gain.
