    About 2,100 of the employees who applied for the Trump administration’s second deferred resignation offer at the IRS were denied, according to a person familiar with the matter. Roughly 20,000 IRS employees applied to take the deferred resignation offer which allows them to be on paid administrative leave through Sept. 30. This is just one of the incentives the Trump administration is giving to entice federal workers to leave and further its effort to shrink the federal workforce.

    The IRS watchdog is evaluating how probationary IRS employees were terminated, the office confirmed Friday. Roughly 7,315 probationary employees at the IRS were first fired in February amid a slew of similar firings of probationary workers across the federal government. Since then these employees have been experiencing whiplash with their employment status as the issue plays out in court.

    Melanie Krause, acting commissioner of the IRS for less than two months, announced her last day at the agency was Wednesday, according to an email seen by Bloomberg Tax. “After 3½ memorable and engaging years of working with all of you, the decision to start a new chapter wasn’t an easy one but it is the right one for me and my family at this juncture,” Krause said in her email to all IRS employees. She is now going on leave, according to the email.

    Gary Shapley, a Hunter Biden tax probe whistleblower, will be named acting IRS commissioner, according to an internal memorandum seen by Bloomberg Tax. Shapley will be taking over for Melanie Krause, the current acting commissioner, who is among the roughly 20,000 IRS employees taking a deferred resignation offer. Shapley will be the fourth person to hold the job this year as the agency stares down more cuts to its workforce. CNN earlier reported the pick.
