The Senate confirmed former Rep. Billy Long (R-Mo.) to serve as IRS commissioner, becoming the sixth leader to hold the job this year. Long, President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the embroiled agency, won confirmation Thursday in a 53-44 party-line vote. He was cleared after facing questions from Democrats over his ties to a firm that promoted tax credits that the Treasury Department says don’t exist, and over donations from the credit’s advocates that helped him pay off campaign debts.

Senate Republicans Weigh $30,000 SALT CapSenate Republicans seeking to put their mark on the House-passed tax-and-immigration package are considering raising the state and local tax deduction cap to $30,000, lower than the House’s $40,000 plan. Sen. Thom Tillis, a moderate North Carolina Republican involved in the discussions, said senators are discussing reducing the cap to at least that amount.
