Many people in Lawrence didn’t know what a treasure the town had, until it was almost lost. Prairie Park, in east Lawrence, is home to an incredibly rare parcel of remnant prairie. A remnant praire, or virgin prairie, is a parcel of grassland that has remained undeveloped by humans throughout its history—never tilled, farmed or put into service for human needs.

From quiet study spots enhanced with native flowers to hiking trails and birdwatching opportunities, KU’s campus offers a wide variety of natural respites. “There’s a lot that people just don’t know about,” said Avery Johnsmeyer, president of the KU Botany Club and a sophomore studying microbiology and environmental studies.

KU is celebrating Women’s History Month with the fourth annual Celebration of Women in Science on Saturday, March 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dyche Hall Natural History Museum. Featuring hands-on experiments and presentations from the women’s science community at KU, the event is focused on learning opportunities for all ages. “It’s a really great opportunity,” said Kelly Matsunaga, a paleobotanist and presenter at the event.
