MICHIGAN, USA — Workers at Detroit's Marathon Petroleum hit the picket lines Wednesday afternoon after failed negotiations. Over 200 teamsters went on strike over safety and pay disputes. In the past, refinery issues have impacted the price of gas—but experts say that will not be the case this time. “A lot of refineries have contingency plans when labor strikes are being threatened or carried out,” said Patrick De Haan, petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.

Homeowners insurance in the Cornhusker state is nearly twice as expensive as the national average, according to Insurify. “We’ve been seeing a trend, especially over the past 12-18 months, more increases than we’ve seen in the past 36 years that I’ve been an agent,” said Amy Hruska, the incoming President of Independent Insurance Agents of Nebraska.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Gas prices jumped up to nearly $4 a gallon this week, according to a report by GasBuddy. In West Michigan, some stations jumped close to 30 cents overnight. The price change comes days after the numbers dropped after the Fourth of July holiday, elevating the financial burden on drivers. Many at the pump are now left frustrated with the sudden change.

Today is the first day of a staycation for me. It is also the month before my birthday. As long as I can remember, the month leading up to my birthday has been introspective, revealing, and full of emotion. This year feels more intense, perhaps because I missed the opportunity last year. Last week was challenging. Yesterday was almost unbearable. I said I was cranky. But really, I was sad.
