On Monday night, Diana Ross made a triumphant return to the Met Gala red carpet for the first time since 2003, and her long train turned heads on the museum steps. The singer and disco icon was joined by her son, Evan Ross, as she walked the carpet—and a team of attendants who helped her up the steps after her full 18-foot train was unfurled. The younger Ross helped the Nigerian designer Ugo Mozie with the look, a sumptuous white gown with crystals, beads, and a feather trim.

Though the palace was in the middle of London, it is an isolated oasis surrounded by gardens. Still, the princess took advantage of city living and was apparently known to exit the palace grounds in disguise in order to enjoy nearby bars and hot spots, especially during the years after her divorce.
