Spring is just around the corner. I know this because the regional high school basketball tournaments are now upon us, which usually bring another snowstorm or two, then the start of the spring warm-up. Except, of course, for the annual Wyoming State Track Meet in Casper. That’s usually a lock for cold and wet weather. Once those high school events are over, the sky will part, ushering in sunny days and warm weather.

The Riverton City Council on a 5-2 vote Tuesday night agreed on first reading to expand liquor serving hours on Sunday from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. to be consistent with serving hours the rest of the week. The vote came after much debate. In a public hearing in advance of discussion on the topic, former mayor Ron Warpness noted that alcohol is available 20 hours each day, meaning that at present there are 130 hours for serving alcohol in the city in a week that contains 168 hours.

At the January 21 meeting of the Riverton City Council, the Riverton Chamber and Visitors Center presented a comprehensive review of work they are engaged in to promote tourism and economic development. Cathy Cline and Chamber Director Cindy Olson Roden said a recent initiative of the chamber is to bridge the gap between the business community and local sports events, including Central Wyoming College, Riverton High and club sports.

The Riverton City Council on a 4-3 vote directed all remaining and future funds collected by the half-percent economic development tax to support commercial air service at Central Wyoming Regional Airport. The tax’s renewal was rejected by voters in November. The tax, however, will bring in approximately $70,000 per month through the end of the tax distribution next May, said Mia Harris, the city’s administrative services director.

The second reading of an ordinance regulating parking in the city was voted down by a majority of the city council on November 19 following a lengthy discussion. The ordinance was initially approved on November 5, but several changes on second reading were called confusing by Mayor Tim Hancock and negative public comments doomed the proposed new rules.
