It’s 8:30 a.m. and I’m barefoot on a yoga mat in the gardens of my hotel in Goa, surrounded by the towering red Heliconia plants native to the region. My instructor gently guides me into another pose beneath the cloudless sky. There’s no noise, no rush, just the sound of my breath and the hum of nature. I end the session with a homemade beetroot shot and sit quietly, basking in the stillness. It feels like my very own version of Eat, Pray, Love, minus the heartbreak.

As a young Black woman growing up, the image of a cowgirl was not relatable. In my mind, she belonged to dusty westerns and glossy country music videos; white, fictional, and far removed from anything I saw in my world. Blackness had no place in that world, let alone Black femininity on horseback. The idea of Black women commanding horses and dominating rodeo arenas simply didn’t exist in the mainstream cultural narrative.

It’s a warm Tuesday evening, and I’m weaving through the post-work crowd on Clapham High Street, caught somewhere between excitement and nerves. I’m on my way to my first-ever line dancing class, dressed in comfortable clothes and sensible shoes, and armed with a healthy dose of scepticism. My curiosity started, oddly enough, in Texas. A visit to the Lone Star State left me with a lingering fascination for all things Western.

I usually plan my trips well in advance, but every now and then, the itch to get away strikes unexpectedly. When that happens, I crave somewhere that’s close to home, is effortlessly charming, and most importantly is packed with great places to eat. For a foodie like me, that’s non-negotiable.
