The six-time all star’s contract is up after this season and he has made it clear that he wants out. “It honestly breaks my heart because Jimmy’s the heart and soul of our team,” said fan Daniel Mena. “And you know in the playoffs he’s gonna turn up and go crazy. But right now he wants to leave us.

This weekend, South Florida’s sports teams made an international splash as the Miami Heat and Florida Panthers played abroad. The Panthers defeated the Dallas Stars in Finland, a homecoming for Finnish players Alexander Barkov, Anton Lundell, Eetu Luostarinen, Niko Mikkola, and assistant coach Tuomo Ruutu. Captain Barkov celebrated scoring in his hometown, calling it “amazing”.

Sure the Miami Heat beat the Florida State Seminoles this past weekend 36-14 and climbed to fifth in the national rankings. But what fans at the game really wanted to talk about was the teams’ storied rivalry. It dates back decades. In fact, this rivalry has lasted 70 years dating back to the 1950’s. Even after all that time, there is still a lot of bad blood between the two teams. “When FSU and Miami play you know it’s gonna be a good game,” said U.M. fan Carl Dayle.

Miami heat legend Dwyane Wade was honored with a statue outside of the Kaseya Center for his hard work and the legacy he left. The three-time champion was celebrated with a performance from Rick Ross and several speeches from Heat Legends like Udonis Haslem and Miami Heat President Pat Riley. All shared their experiences with Wade and why he was worthy. “This is the best thing we can give a star that means this much to not only the city but the franchise itself” says Wade supporter Stephen Rasco.

The Miami Hurricanes are 2-0 after crushing their first two opponents including Florida A&M University in their home opener. Cam Ward, the new senior quarterback from Washington State, is a huge reason for the seemingly new and elevated team. He threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns, including one where he leaped over defenders to dive into the end zone himself. Despite putting up big numbers, Ward says he isn’t surprised. “I put up numbers my whole life so the numbers don’t shock me,” he said.

Luis Suárez scored twice as a substitute to lead Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory over D.C. United on Sunday. Leonardo Campana also contributed a goal and an assist for Inter Miami. Lionel Messi, the team’s number-one star, missed the game due to a muscle injury sustained in a previous match. Jared Stroud scored for D.C. United in the 14th minute, but Inter Miami responded with goals from Campana and Suárez. Suárez’s goals came in the 72nd and 85th minutes, securing the win for Inter Miami.

Feast with the Beasts, the annual fundraising event for Zoo Miami, took place March 1. Guests were able to enjoy an exclusive after-hours exploration of the zoo while indulging in culinary delights from top South Florida restaurants. The event had visually appealing lights displayed all over the area. There was also music for the guests. And the zoo brought out animals including the Florida panthers, the black bears, the cheetah and a new tiger cub.

For the first time in history, Miami hosts the annual Caribbean Series. The baseball tournament is taking place at LoanDepot Park and as the first weekend finishes up, some fans are noticing which teams stand out from the rest. “Puerto Rico is good,” said Santos Ruiz, a Dominican Fan. “They got a good defense, the best defense in the whole Caribbean Series right now.” The regular games will continue until Wednesday, Feb.7 and the teams that qualify will start the semi-finals the next day.

Now that the Heat and the Panthers have each played two games of their finals series, Sideline reviews how the teams performed over the weekend. The Miami Heat had a rocky start in Denver and Aquiles Barreto was at the Ball Arena to cover the Heat Culture “among a sea of blue and gold.”Game 2 for the Heat went better as the team earned a hard-earned in Colorado and fans went crazy here in the 305 at the Kaseya Center.
