DIGITAL REVIEW — A slew of string quartets crop up time and again with recordings of both standard repertoire and new music. While the musicianship never fails to impress, the sheer number of new groups and works composed for them can make your head spin, so when I saw that the Anzû Quartet was not another string quartet but one for violin, cello, clarinet, and piano, I was immediately intrigued.

Tan Dun (pictured here in the 2022/2023 season) returns to conduct the Seattle Symphony in a program that culminates with his multimedia symphonic work, Nu Shu: The Secret Songs of Women (May 15 & 16). Photo by Brandon Patoc. The first three works in this thrilling program pit fire against water with very different sounds and results. The first is taken from the most successful ballet by important 20th century Spanish composer and pianist Manuel de Falla (1876–1946).

Solomiya Moroz is a UK-based Ukrainian-Canadian composer and flutist whose textural music defies preconceived notions of timbre and conventions of harmony. Moroz is interested in interdisciplinary and gestural composition; she blends into her music improvisation and elaborate kinds of electronic processing.

With an alert and critical mind, Igor Levit places his art in the context of social events and understands it as inseparably linked to them. The New York Times describes Mr. Levit as one of the “most important artists of his generation.” In 2018, he was named the eighth recipient of the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award, recognized as one of the world’s most distinguished music awards. Since the 2022–2023 season, he has been a co-artistic director of the Heidelberger Frühling Musikfestival.

ORLANDO, Fla. — It was a turbulent night at Steinmetz Hall, full of orchestral swells, deep rumblings, and colossal fortes, as Amsterdam’s revered Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra performed Nov. 18 in Central Florida on the first night of its six-date U.S. tour with conductor Klaus Mäkelä that culminates on Nov. 22 and 23 at Carnegie Hall and on Nov. 24 at the Kennedy Center.

Although Sarasota is home to several performing arts organizations, programming in the Southwest Florida city largely skews conservative. Not so for ensembleNEWSRQ, or “enSRQ” for short, a chamber group that focuses on contemporary music. It was founded in 2015 by violinist Samantha Bennett and percussionist George Nickson, former principals of the Sarasota Orchestra.
