Days after wrapping on new Irish comedy Fran the Man, filmmaker Stephen Bradley turned to another major project he had to take on. As he filmed the movie on the streets of the capital, Stephen knew he needed lung surgery as cancer that had been treated with radiotherapy had recurred.

It might be hard to believe now, but I was painfully shy as a child — outside the house. At home, I was as brazen as the next kid, but in the glare of the gaze of the general public, I shrank. I hated people looking at me. I remember the exquisite agony of being ushered out to dance in the Owenahincha Hotel where we used to go for holidays with my aunty. The band playing, everyone swinging, I would refuse point blank to go on the dance floor.

Some of the world’s most respected screenwriters are heading to Ireland for Storyhouse, an annual festival which champions the art of storytelling for the screen. Storyhouse is a not-for-profit initiative spearheaded by Academy Award-nominated producer and co-CEO of Element Pictures, Ed Guiney. Storyhouse Lab, an interactive programme for emerging writers, will take place in conjunction with the festival, which is already sold out. “This year, we've got a great lineup,” says Guiney.
