Did I ever tell you about the time I nearly married Noel Gallagher? The year is 1996, the day is August 14, and Oasis are in town. The sun shone strong, that day, my friends. I am at the beach, wearing my 19-year-old body, a swimsuit and a sarong. We are driving home from a day of sunning and swimming. I know some friends are going, and in those gloriously spontaneous, pre-mobile phone days, I decide to get dropped off at the Blackrock Rd and see what the craic is.

About 10 years ago, I got a birthday present of Ruth Field’s Run Fat Bitch Run, from my husband. By the time he came out of the coma and recovered from the surgery, I’d actually read it and, to be fair, there were some brilliant nuggets in there. It inspired me to join a couch-to-5k group and we used to meet at the Lee fields twice a week, walking and jogging intermittently until we progressed to running 5km with relative ease. Self high-five. Done and dusted. In my head, I can now run a 5k.

Being a tourist in your own county is underrated. This is especially true if you’re lucky enough to have been born in Cork. So, we decide a smug countycation is the way to go, and we spend a brilliant week gallivanting around West Cork. Yoga on the beach, followed by a dip and a sauna on Inchydoney? Check. Cave exploring on Red Strand? Check.
