By Esther SperberI was born and raised in Israel, the oldest of 10 siblings, in a liberal-minded Orthodox Jewish family. I love my family, a diverse gang of smart people who respect one another even when disagreeing. Politically we are a mixed group. Some of us are fiscally conservative or libertarian. Others are traditional liberals who believe in a social safety net. Although only three of us live in the United States, we are all American citizens and eligible voters in the November elections.

After a year of war on multiple fronts, Yahya Sinwar, the brutal leader of Hamas, was killed by IDF soldiers last week. Perhaps this is a sort of victory, and a measure of justice, but war, even when necessary, takes a toll. The most horrible price is lives lost, followed by injuries, trauma, and destroyed homes. Israeli doctors documented a 20 percent increase in tooth and gum problems, attributed to stress. The devastation and death in Gaza and Lebanon are unfathomable and immeasurably greater.

Israeli Americans for Kamala is a fast-growing group, representing a majority of Israeli Americans who wholeheartedly endorse Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States. Our community includes people with a wide range of life experiences and political beliefs, united by a shared love of the two countries of which we are citizens.

I have no idea how to win a war. Not the war in Gaza nor the war in Lebanon, nor the West Bank… Is this war just? Is it necessary? What I do know is that children should not be the targets of war. Last Shabbat we read the Parashat Ki Tetze which ends with these words about Amalek: Therefore, when your God grants you safety from all your enemies around you, in the land that your God יהוה is giving you as a hereditary portion, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.

We were sitting in a Jewish high school auditorium in New York for College Night, which was postponed from the fall to mid-May due to the October 7 Hamas attack and war. My daughter, a junior, sat between me and my husband as over 30 university admissions officers gave short pitches. "We would love you to join us at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem," said one young representative, "the safest university for a Jewish student."
