On Monday, the Patriots made two roster moves, releasing third-year offensive tackle Andrew Stueber to make room for a semi-familiar face. Last year was a very shaky rookie season for Patriots kicker Chad Ryland. And shaky is putting it mildly. Despite drilling the longest game-winning field goal in franchise history (a 57-yard kick to beat the Denver Broncos on Dec. 24), the former Maryland kicker missed nine field goals and ended his first year in New England with a field goal percentage of just 64%. Heading into his second season in the Patriots uniform, Ryland knows he needs to improve. And fast. “The best is ahead,” Ryland said.

The Patriots have had very good attendance so far for the start of their optional spring practices. On Wednesday, that list grew slightly, including some bigger names on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive tackle Christian Barmore and cornerback Jonathan Jones were not spotted at the start of the team’s organized team activity session, as well as wide receiver Kendrick Bourne (who is still working his way back from last season’s ACL tear) and linebacker Jahlani Tavai.

One rushing touchdown in the preseason opener and Patriots fans were ready to hand the keys of the franchise over to Louisville rookie Malik Cunningham. Instead, he was released, signed to the practice squad, released, re-signed and later released again, only to be claimed by the Baltimore Ravens. Now during the Ravens’ OTA session on Thursday, it appears the former quarterback is trying his hand at wideout.
