Outside of keeping her in shape during the college rowing off-season, running had never been a big part of Amélie Tristant’s life. But now, she says, she is hooked. Earlier this year, Tristant, a Gonzaga graduate and local nurse practitioner, ran the London marathon to mark her sixth completed event in the World Marathon Majors. “It was just so – I don’t even know how to describe it,” Tristant said of running the London marathon on her 30th birthday.

For as long as she could remember, it was Bridget Burns’ dream to compete in college athletics. In what sport, though, was not clear to her – not until she began competitively racing in Nordic skiing in sixth grade. Then it clicked. “I really loved it,” Burns said.

For the first time since 2001, the Whitworth men’s basketball team will not play for the Northwest Conference championship. The Pirates, the top seed in the tournament, fell 71-64 to Lewis in Clark in a physical semifinal in a packed Whitworth Fieldhouse on Friday night. Whitworth mounted a desperate comeback in the final minutes, but ultimately fell short as Lewis and Clark advanced to the championship for the first time since 2015.

After an up-and-down end to the regular season, the Whitworth men’s basketball team enters the Northwest Conference tournament optimistic in its chances to secure a fourth consecutive conference title. The top-seeded Pirates (22-3, 13-3) will host Lewis and Clark (13-12, 9-7) on Friday in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
